This time of year has always been a particularly exciting time for me especially since I became a member of the NARAS aka The Grammys back in 2016.
All of the potential nominees are on edge wondering if spending all that money, and sending out all those promotional emails, physical copies of their work, and friending people on social media with hopes of being nominated for an award for their hard work will garner them a nomination.
I have personally known a few people that have been very successful in obtaining a nomination and an award. I sat in the front row at the Microsoft Center watching Chance the Rapper receive his first award that was not televised, and actually, a few people that I consider friends were nominated and subsequently won in 2017.
But this time is different — COVID 19 has devastated the world especially here in the United States, right now as I sit here typing this article the death toll is approaching 255,000 with over 12 million people infected, and some say that the death toll will reach around 450,000 by the time we are ready to relaunch our station on March 1, 2021.
I couldn’t help but wonder, how will they pull off this award show seeing that they use the Staples Center in Los Angeles — maybe they should scale it all the way down — to the Microsoft Theater that is just right across the street it.
So, on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. EST/ 9:00 a.m. PST — the announcement ceremony will take place and streamed from Grammy.com. Harvey Mason Jr. will announce the nominees along with special guests. There are 84 categories that are up for grabs each and every year.
I just hope no matter how they pull it off, and they will as they always seem to do ever since 1958, that it will be safe, and that this will not turn into a situation where someone has shown up to the awards infected just because they want to be seen on the red carpet, thus infecting everyone else.
